How to Transition from an Office to a Home Office: A Game Plan

COVID-19 has been a turning point in how we treat workspaces.

Here’s the game plan to transition to your home office.

Here’s the game plan to transition to your home office.

As a part of the pivoting process and transitioning to a “new normal,” everyone has turned their homes into workspaces. Whether you have a spare room or a small corner in your living room, many people work from home.

The challenges of working from home include the lack of productivity boosters such as comfortable chairs or ergonomic keyboards. You can be more distracted at home, and you can also feel discouraged from continuing your work because you don’t have the right tools.

That’s why we have a game plan for you on how to transition from an office to a home office.

Step 1. Find a place in your home for your office.

Whether it’s a small corner in your living room or that spare room you never use, pick a place that would be optimal for your productivity. Here are some tips to help you choose your space. Make sure there is a window nearby so you can get some sunlight in your day (unless, of course, you work better in a cave-like environment). Make sure it is a quiet space away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life.

Step 2. Design your home office.

If you have just a corner of a large room like a living room, this step may take less time. Think about where you will place the furniture and whether you would add some finishing touches, like plants, to make the office cozier. Think about how to squeeze out as much productivity you can from the small space. Even if your “office” is just your desk and a chair, you can optimize the room by adding a utility cart to hold your files and belongings or getting an ergonomic chair cushion.

Step 3. Get your furniture.

If you’re moving from an office to a home office, chances are your employer will let you take some of the stuff homes to have an optimal working environment. This can include desktop computers or laptops, your office chair or even your desk!
